The Optimist Club of Fayetteville honored officers in both the city of Fayetteville and Fayette County at its annual Respect For Law dinner.

Secretary-treasurer Tom Roberts said that National Law Week was first begun in 1977 and has continued each year since.

Lt. Jeffery Harris, Fayetteville Police Department, was chosen to represent the city. Maj. Harold Simmons, also a previous award recipient, said that Harris was his day shift supervisor. Simmons praised Harris by saying that he could always be counted on to complete any task given.

Sheriff's Department Maj. Wayne Hannah introduced Investigator Ronald D. Hardy, saying Hardy is an active and dedicated member of the force.

"He has been commended by members of the public on numerous occasions for his professionalism and courteous demeanor.

"He is both compassionate and firm as circumstances dictate," said Hannah.

Maria Leanor Martinez, Fayetteville Elementary School, was named police chief for a day by writing the winning essay, "If I were police chief."

Mary Jean Griffin, St. John the Evangelist Catholic School, was named Educator of the Year. She is active in assisting and submitting students' work for the Optimist Oratorical Contest each year.
