Air Force Lt. Col. Norman D. Potter, son-in-law of Lorene Carroll of Fayetteville and the late Robert C. Carroll, was recently named commander of the 42nd Airborne Command and Control Squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Ariz.

The mission of Potter's squadron of 375 officers, non-commissioned officers and airmen is to provide unified and theater commanders an Airborne Battlefield Command and Control Center, with capability for combat operations during war, contingencies, exercises and special classified missions.

The 42nd Airborne organizes and maintains a trained force of mission-ready crew members and eight specially equipped EC-130E aircraft to support worldwide combat operations.

A 1973 graduate of Russell High School in East Point, Ga., Potter earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering technology from the University of Alabama in 1980 and a master's degree in international studies from Troy State University in 1988. He is a recent graduate of the Air War College. The mission of the Air War College is to educate senior officers to lead at the strategic level in the employment of air and space forces, including joint operations, in support of national security.

Potter received his commission in 1980 through the Academy of Military Science. He has been a detachment commander, served in a joint NATO assignment, and as an operations officer. Before assuming his current position, Potter was deputy commander of the 961st Airborne Air Control Squadron, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan.

Potter and his wife, Pamela, are the parents of two sons, Trent and Heath, both students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
