Child safety fair planned

The Fayette County Safe Kids Coalition will sponsor a children's safety fair Saturday in honor of National Safe Kids Week, May 5-12.

Displays and information booths geared to both children and their parents will be at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Fayetteville 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no charge for the fair.

"Make it a safe kids summer" will be the theme of the fair, which will be in the parking lot by the store's garden center.

In addition to the static displays of fire, rescue and law enforcement equipment, the coalition will offer a child safety seat check up. Four out of five child safety seats checked nationally are found to be improperly installed, and over 90 percent of the child safety seats checked by the coalition have been improperly installed.

There will also be a disc jockey, water safety display, and a bike/scooter rodeo and skills course. Children can bring their bikes or scooters and helmets, and volunteers will help fit the helmets properly. Operation Lifesaver also will bring its mobile railroad crossing display and train engine simulator.

And the group will offer a free car wash to those who stop by.

Unintentional injuries from auto crashes, fires, burns, drownings, poisonings, falls, biking/skating, walking and the like are the leading cause of death to children 14 and younger, according to the coalition.

According to a release from the National Safe Kids Campaign, nearly half of all unintentional injury-related deaths occur during the summer, and 12 percent of all deaths occur in July.
