Dunn to serve on water superagency

Fayette County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn is ready and waiting for the new metro Atlanta water superagency to get organized so he can begin his service on it.

A panel composed of the County Commission and the mayors of Fayetteville and Brooks recently chose Dunn as the county's representative on the North Georgia Water Planning District.

Established by the General Assembly at the urging of Gov. Roy Barnes this year, the agency will oversee water production and conservation policies for a 19 county region around Atlanta.

Fayette leaders have expressed concern about formation of the agency, saying that it threatens local rule. Fayette's water supply has remained strong due to wise planning, they say, adding they fear that a regional agency might force the county to share its water resources with other counties that haven't planned as well.

"I think we have to really take this seriously," Dunn said recently. "I think it's very critical that we have good representation on that board."

As Fayette's representative on the group, Dunn will likely serve on an advisory committee concerned with the Flint River basin, as well as on various technical committees, he said.

But most counties haven't yet chosen their representatives, so it will be awhile before the agency is functioning, he added.

"I'll be contacting the cities," Dunn said. "I want to involve people from Fayetteville, Peachtree City and Brooks," he added.
