Cannon: Count off-base on sewer dispute

Tyrone Town Councilman Ronnie Cannon wishes the Fayette County Commission would listen.

In recent letters, the commission threatened legal steps to prevent a proposed sewerage deal with Tyrone and Fairburn from coming to fruition.

Tyrone is buying Fairburn's excess wastewater capacity to provide sewerage to the John Wieland planned unit development on Ga. Highway 74 and a proposed office park by Richard Bowers, also on Hwy. 74.

Fayette officials worry about Tyrone allowing residential development on the busy state highway, but Cannon said that has never been in the town's plans.

"We've always said that sewer is only going to be provided to those projects. The only other project that was discussed was the Sandy Creek treatment plant, but the school board maintains they cannot afford that. We do not want to sewer any residential development," he said.

One of the reasons the town wants to provide sewerage to the Wieland development is that initial plans called for the homeowners association to have its own sewer plant.

Cannon is concerned that homeowners should not be in charge of a system that is close to many of Fayette and Coweta counties' water sources.

The town also would like to see the huge office park developed by Richard Bowers.

"Doesn't the county realize what a big tax benefit this would be?" He said.

Cannon said developers have approached Tyrone officials about residential development on Hwy. 74, but they were turned down.

"We could have let Truett Cathy and J.T. Williams develop 800 acres years ago, but we turned them down," he said.

Cannon believes the sewer agreement with Fairburn will be allowed.
