Nub's not going anywhere yet

The produce stand that Fayette Countians have grown to know and love on Ga. Highway 54 may have to move, but not any time soon.

"They told me it might be years," said Howard Durham, best known by his nickname, Nub.

County commissioners recently approved a change in zoning for the eight acres Durham farms next to his stand, from agricultural-residential, which allows farming and the sale of farm produce, to office-institutional, which doesn't.

The 3D Properties company asked for the zoning change to build a medical office building.

But Nub's stand is "grandfathered." The zoning change won't affect his operation, and he can stay until construction actually begins.

When that does eventually happen, you won't have to drive too much farther to get your fresh tomatoes or corn. Durham said he has arranged access to a piece of agricultural land at Hwy. 54 and Ebenezer Road.

He has farmed the same spot for 36 years, Durham said. He'll continue to farm it for at least one more season.
