New Christian school opening in Union City

Families who want another education choice in South Fulton County will have one this fall.

The Foundation Christian Academy will open its doors later this year at 4651 Flat Shoals Road in Union City.

The school is an offshoot of Open Word Christian Ministries and administrator Maya Taylor said the school will work at establishing a foundation for its students.

"Our foundation's crumbling in our school systems. Look at the school shootings, the pregnancies and the drug abuse," Taylor said.

The school will open with approximately 50 students in prekindergarten through second grade. Tuition is $4,000 a year for 3- and 4-year-old students in pre-k and $4,500 for first and second grade students.

The philosophy of the school is based on a God-centered view that all truth is God's truth and that the Bible is inspired and the only infallible word of God.

In addition to regular classes, the school also offers instruction on Christian values and virtues.

One of the unique aspects of the school is its focus on the family.

"We don't just enroll students here, we enroll the family," said Taylor.

As part of orientation, families will be required to take a four-week orientation class before the school opens, so school officials will better understand a student's situation.

"How can we expect him to pass a test if he didn't have dinner the night before?" Taylor said.

Open Word Christian Ministries has been in the area for 10 years, and is getting ready to build a new church and school building in Fairburn.

Taylor said the goal of the schools is to give each child the tools to help pursue and attain the vocation to which the Lord leads him or her.
