PTC youths honored for their community service By JOHN MUNFORD Abby Cisko, a fourth grader at Kedron Elementary, has been named the winner of the Exemplary Youth Community Service Award given by the Peachtree City Commission on Children and Youth. Cisko was one of 15 youths honored at the CCY's regular meeting Tuesday night. She was recognized for her efforts to collect items for children in the Rainbow Shelter in Clayton County. Children staying at the shelter often were taken from their homes in the middle of the night, and Cisko helped teachers spread the word about her project by creating a computer presentation for them to present to their classes at the school, said CCY Chairwoman Tonya Curry. Six members of a local Girl Scout Cadette Troop were awarded second place for their development of a seminar teaching young children babysitting techniques. Ali Benson, Jessie Dawkins, Laura Judy, Karen Lee, Juliane Rossomme and Joanne Smith of Cadette Troop 278 taught the class to 48 students ranging from 9 to 13 years old. The seminar focused on understanding the needs of younger children and how to be more responsible babysitters. Other topics included First Aid and Child Development. The third-place winner was Samantha Francis, a first grader from Peachtree City Elementary School. Francis picks up litter on the cart paths near her home and sometimes brings her 3-year-old sister along to set a good example. She also "doesn't understand" why adults can't take more care with their trash, Curry stated. Other youths received honorable mention, including: Gregory Rossomme, a home school student who hiked down a portion of Mt. Fuji while darkness set in to retrieve a flashlight since others in his party had forgotten theirs. Jamie and Brittney Kalogeros of Braelinn Elementary, who adopted a cart path near their home and collect litter from a nearby tunnel entrance. Hunter Garris, Evan Roth, Caylin Riley and Brittanie Browning of the J.C. Booth Middle School Beta Club. Each club member accumulated over 50 hours of community service by participating as peer tutors, teacher helpers and soup kitchen volunteers.
