TDK extension could lighten traffic

Coweta County officials are hoping that traffic relief will come quickly to the bottleneck at Ga. highways 54 and 74.

Last week, the county unveiled a plan to start helping the situation. The county, along with Peachtree City, is working towards extending TDK Boulevard into Coweta County.

The 2.4-mile extension of the road would tie into McIntosh Trail in eastern Coweta County offer commuters another route to get to the industrial park in Peachtree City.

Officials at URS did the engineering for the project and estimate that nearly 20 percent of future trips accessing Peachtree City from Sharpsburg would use the new route instead of Hwy.54.

If their projections are accurate, that would mean nearly 1,600 vehicles would be diverted from the busy intersection.

Officials said the extension provides a shorter route to the industrial section of Peachtree City and provide drivers with a bypass to areas of Peachtree City north and east of the industrial area.

However, officials caution that the road will only be a success if the road is perceived as a viable alternative to Hwy.54 and appropriate signage is placed alerting drivers of the new option.

The construction of the road would also feature a new bridge over Line Creek, along with four foot bike lanes on each side of the extension.
