Richard Flohr attains the rank of Eagle Scout

Approximately 65 people attended as Richard Allen Flohr, a member of Boy Scout Troop 182, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in a special Court of Honor at North Fayette United Methodist Church recently.

Flohr began his scouting experience in 1990 as a Cub Scout in Pack 986. He progressed through the ranks of Bobcat, Wolf and Bear while a member of Pack 986. As a member of Pack 182, he advanced through Webelos and received the highest award offered in Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light.

In 1994, Flohr crossed over from the Cub Scouts into Boy Scouts Troop 182. As a member of Troop 182, he was senior patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and troop guide. He completed both troop led and Flint River Council Junior Leader training courses. In addition, Flohr served on staff as an instructor for an Atlanta Area Council Junior Leader training course.

Flohr received two special awards as a Boy Scout: the mile swim and the 50-mile hike. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow and is the ninth Eagle Scout from Troop 182.

His mother, Millie Flohr, presented the Eagle Medal to Flohr, and his father, David, presented the Eagle Certificate, Eagle neckerchief with custom-made slide and a handmade plaque of recognition. The elder Flohr has served Fayette District as cubmaster of packs 986 and 182, scoutmaster of Troop 182 and is currently serving as the assistant cubmaster and Webelos den leader of Pack 182.

Flohr and his father awarded handmade plaques of "Thanks for helping an Eagle take flight" to four individuals and one couple that supported him throughout his Scouting experience. They are Josh Mazzucco, Richard Gray, Rusty Alley - former scoutmaster of Troop 182, Mr. and Mrs. Walt Keiser - founders and mainstays of the Scouting program at North Fayette UMC, and Don Landis Sr., who helped in completion of Flohr's Eagle project.

Following the ceremony, there was a reception in the church gymnasium. A table full of Scout memorabilia chronicling Flohr's Scouting history was on display.

After graduation from Sandy Creek High School, Flohr is slated to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. He hopes to become a U.S. Marine aviation crew chief.
