Nearly 300 people participated in the Confederate Memorial Day event that took place at the gazebo at Heritage Park.

It was hosted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Lafayette McLaws Camp 79, Fayetteville. Camp Commander Scott Gilbert said the turnout numbered over 100 more than last year.

The speaker was a history teacher from Griffin, James Fowler, who pointed out that Southerners have always responded to the call to defend hearth and home through all wars. "They have always honored the place they were from and the least we can do is honor them here in our hearts this evening."

The group of hoop-skirted ladies and children and gray-clad men walked to the Fayetteville City Cemetery for a program presented by youth. Twelve Confederate state flags were carried in a parade by descendants of a veteran from each of the states.

A volley of artillery was fired by Phillip's Legion, along with a salute by riflemen.

A reception followed at the Hollingsworth House, though built 35 years after the end of the war.
