Peachtree City's Bryan Edwards named VP at CCSU

Peachtree City resident Bryan P. Edwards, Ph.D., who has overseen Clayton College and State University's Continuing Education program since 1982, has been named the university's vice president for External Relations by President Dr. Thomas K. Harden.

Previously the dean and executive director of Continuing Education and Community Outreach, Edwards assumes his new role at Clayton State with the offices of Continuing Education, Development, and Alumni Relations under his control.

Expansion of Edwards' responsibilities, and the Office of External Relations, is planned for the near future, says Harden.

In conjunction with Edwards' appointment, several additional leadership changes have been made in Clayton State's Continuing Education and Academic divisions.

The director of the Baptist Center at the University of Georgia from 1966 to 1982, Edwards has directed the growth of Clayton State's CE program over the past 19 years to the point where it is one of the largest in metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia, serving more than 65,000 individuals a year.

At the same time, he has become one of the best-known community activists in the Southern Crescent, having served with no less than 22 regional and statewide community, government, non-profit and economic development organizations in his 19 years at Clayton State.

Edwards and the Clayton State CE program have won many awards over the years, the most notable ones coming in the past four years, including two "Most Innovative Program Awards" from the Georgia Adult Education Association, and a "Most Innovative Program Award in the Southeastern United States" from the University Continuing Education Association. Edwards was given the Distinguished Service Award by GAEA in 1998 and was then named the Outstanding Adult Educator in Georgia for 2000 by GAEA. He also is a Lifetime Member of the National Blue Key Honor Society.

An economic development expert as well as an honored adult educator, Edwards is currently one of the few educators in Georgia who are members of economic development authorities, having been appointed to the Fayette County Development Authority last year.

In 1987, Edwards began a regional coalition of chamber presidents and executives to promote regional economic development. He also opened a business development center in Roswell in 1999 in partnership with Mayor Jere Wood and the City Council, and is currently the university's liaison to the Gateway Village development project that will transform most of the parts of Clayton County that border on the Clayton State campus.

As part of his work with Gateway Village, Edwards wrote the concept paper for the development's key facility, the International Executive Training and Conference Center.

The holder of a B.A. in English from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., Edwards earned his M.Div. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and his Ed.D. in adult education from the University of Georgia.

Edwards' wife, Norma, who earned her Ed.D. in the same 1978 graduation ceremony as her husband, has had a distinguished career in mental health service.

The Edwardses have two children Pamela R. Karg, a first-grade teacher at Pates Creek Elementary School in Henry County; and Stephen Edwards, a technical illustrator with Georgia Quick Start.
