Three qualify for Bost's seat so far

As of press time Tuesday, three candidates had paid their qualifying fees to run for County Commission to replace Harold Bost.

Bost resigned recently citing personal concerns.

So far, running to replace him are Stephen D. Ott, a Fayetteville lawyer; Charlie Mask, retired part time worker at Rocky's Barbershop, and Scott Gilbert, vice president of Southside Wrecker Service.

Gilbert also is commander of the Gen. LaFayette McLaws Camp 79 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and an outspoken critic of the state Legislature's recent decision to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag.

A special election to replace Bost will be nonpartisan, and party affiliation will not be listed on the ballot.

The county Board of Elections last week formally set the election for Tuesday, June 19, with qualifying from 9 a.m. this Monday, April 30, to noon Friday, May 4.

Candidates sign up at the county Board of Elections office, room 208 at the County Administrative Complex, 140 Stonewall Ave.

The qualifying fee is 3 percent of the commissioner's annual salary and has been set at $529.50.

If a runoff is needed, it will be July 10. According to officials, numerous candidates have expressed an interest in running for the seat, so a runoff is likely.

Applicants must live in the 3rd District, and a map is available in the elections office. However, the election will be county-wide.

In order to vote in this election, voters must be registered by May 21.

The Fayetteville Kiwanis Club has scheduled a forum to give voters a chance to meet the candidates.

It's scheduled for Thursday, June 7 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Fayette County Library.
