A lottery will be used to select students who will participate in Coweta County School System's pre-kindergarten classes for the school year 2001-2002.

Parents may register their 4-year-olds at the schools in their attendance districts Monday through Friday 2:30 - 4 p.m. beginning immediately through April 27, and Saturday, April 28 from 8 - 10 a.m..

Due to the demand, there are no transfers for pre-kindergarten. Names will be drawn at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28 at each elementary school.

Twenty names will be drawn for each class. Twins or triplets will be registered and drawn together unless it is for the 20th slot.

In this case, if no other slot becomes available before school begins, the parent or guardian must make a decision concerning the slot. The remaining names will be drawn and placed on a waiting list in the order in which they are drawn.

The principals or their designees in the schools will draw the names in open meeting areas and the instructional lead teacher or designated person will record the names and number the registration forms in the order in which they are drawn.

It is not necessary for parents to be present when names are drawn. The pre-kindergarten teachers will notify them by mail and on the phone. Children who register after the drawing April 28 will be added to the waiting list in the order in which they register.

Each elementary school has one pre-kindergarten class with the exception of Eastside, Newnan Crossing and Moreland. They each have two classes.

Students in the State Lottery Pre-kindergarten must be 4 years of age on or before Sept. 1. A child eligible for kindergarten may not attend the pre-kindergarten program. Children must have been born between Sept. 2, 1996, and Sept. 1, 1997.

To attend the pre-kindergarten program, a child must have a Social Security card (or waiver); a birth certificate; hearing, vision, and dental certificate; and an immunization certificate. Hearing, vision and dental and the immunization certificate can be obtained at the Coweta County Health Department or from your pediatrician. A birth certificate is required before the child can enter the first day of school.

The school day for pre-kindergarten is from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the calendar days are the same as the regular school calendar.

Pre-kindergarten students have access to the regular bus lines, breakfast, lunch and the After School Program. For information phone the Office of Curriculum and Instruction at 770-254-2810.
