Top choral students advance to All State

After two grueling auditions, more than 100 Fayette County chorus students have earned the honor to participate in the 2001 All State Chorus workshop and performance scheduled to take place in Savannah April 26-28.

Of the students who made the cut, 47 are from Rising Starr Middle and Starr's Mill High combined. With a total of 26 students, Rising Starr has the most from any one school in Fayette attending the All State program.

"If you are lucky enough to get one or two from your school into All State that's great. It is almost unheard of to have this many students from one school make it into the program," says Jan Whalen, chorus teacher at Rising Starr.

During the first round of auditions, Whalen says 10 of her students scored a 10, meaning no mistakes were made during their performances. At the second audition, eight students earned a perfect score.

"This is a very difficult program to get into. All students who make the cut deserve a lot of praise and recognition," Whalen comments. "I am very proud of my students. What they have done is awesome."

Starr's Mill High School is also sending an unusually high number of students 21 to the program. While chorus teacher Daniel Lane does not know if Starr's Mill has the largest number of high school students attending All State Chorus in Georgia, he says he is sure that the school has one of the top numbers. Starr's Mill sent 21 students to All State last year and was second behind Pebblebrook Performing Arts Magnet School.

"I am almost positive that we will be tops among regular public high schools. Average participation from one school is somewhere around 3-5 students, but all high schools in our county exceed this average because all of the choral programs are strong," Lane comments.

Some 10,000 students audition on the region level for All State Chorus each year. However, only about 1,000 students actually achieve the honor after passing the region and state level auditions. Students are auditioned in the areas of solo performance, tonal memory, scales and sightseeing.
