Fayetteville plans special activities for students

Essay contest, mock council meeting part of Georgia Cities Week calendar

Fayetteville officials are preparing for the city's recognition of Georgia Cities Week, scheduled from April 22-28.

Sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association, the week is filled with activities in cities all over Georgia. This year's theme "Downtown: The Heart of the City" highlights the city's role as the center of business, government and community.

Events scheduled for next week include a mock city council meeting Tuesday, April 24, at 11 a.m. in the council chambers at City Hall. That meeting is the centerpiece of a city government visitation day for Fayette County High School seniors. Also next week is an essay contest for sixth graders, sponsored by the GMA, on the topic, "If I Were Mayor, I Would..."

"We're very proud of our city and the services we provide which help create a sense of community," said Fayetteville Mayor Ken Steele. "Too often people are unaware of how cities enhance their quality of life, and that is why educating our youth regarding the role of city government is such an important task."
