Fayetteville proposes 2 voting precincts By MONROE ROARK
Plans have been put in motion for the creation of two separate voting precincts in the city of Fayetteville. City officials decided, after the large crowd that converged on the Depot last November for the liquor referendum, that growth in the city during the past decade necessitated giving residents more than one place in which to vote. The first step was a resolution approved by the City Council that divides Fayetteville into northern and southern precincts, with Ga. Highway 54 being the dividing line. If this plan is approved, northern voters will cast their ballots at the Lafayette Educational Center on Lafayette Avenue (the old Fayette County High School), while voters in the southern half will go to the county library behind the Stonewall county government complex. The resolution directs the Board of Registrars to investigate and make a recommendation to the City Council that could alter or totally disregard the current proposal. The city must also file a map reflecting the proposed changes with the Secretary of State as well as the Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Office, according to city attorney David Winkle. The U.S. Justice Department must also approve the changes.
