Spring start set for PTC playground

Construction on the first phase of a playground for physically disabled youths in Peachtree City should begin this spring, according to city officials.

The first phase of the Luther Holt Memorial All Children's Playground, expected to cost around $50,000, will hopefully begin as early as May. A second phase tabbed at $50,000 and a third phase estimated to cost $100,000 are also planned for the playground.

The playground, which will be located at Picnic Park behind the city library and municipal complex, will provide full accessibility for children of all physical disabilities.

A volunteer committee is now raising funds for the second phase. To contribute, contact the Peachtree City Recreation Department at 770-631-2542.

Colleen Sugar, chairperson of the playground committee, said many contributions have been recorded so far from citizens, civic groups, businesses, industries and grants. All contributions are appreciated. She helped spur the initiative after having difficulty finding an appropriate playground for her son, John, who uses a walker.

Significant contributions are still needed to reach the remaining $150,000 goal, Sugar added.

"We want this playground to stand out as a source of pride and accomplishment for the whole region," she said.

Contributors are recognized for their contributions in several different levels, starting at Grass Roots and proceeding to Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and, for a contribution of $50,000 or more, Title Level.

The City Council was slated to approve a contractor for the project at its meeting last night.
