Blood drive honors local youth

A local mother is inviting others to give blood in honor of her son.

Health occupations teacher Barbara Phillips has a personal reason for serving as chairman for the upcoming Starr's Mill High School blood drive with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers.

Bart Phillips, son of Gary and Barbara phillips, was only 16 years old when he was diagnosed with renal failure in 1993. Now 23, he continued to use blood components and has already received 10 units of blood since last November from Crawford Long Hospital.

"I try to donate blood whenever I can," said Barbara Phillips, "but sometimes I am deferred because of low hemoglobin. This is one way I can try to give back to all the kind people who have made a difference in Bart's life."

The high school drive is scheduled for Friday, April 20, from 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in classroom 834. The school is at Ga. Highway 74 and Redwine Road.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 103 pounds and show valid photo identification. Each donor will receive a cholesterol screening.

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers supplies blood components for patients at numerous metropolitan Atlanta medical facilities. Its Atlanta branch is part of the 11-branch LifeSouth family, a nonprofit charitable organization that serves more than 70 medical facilities in Georgia, Florida and Alabama.
