His House is a Southern 'on fire' church By CAROLYN CARY
Though it is currently a mission of the First Baptist Church, Fairburn, His House Community Church began in the American Legion Log Cabin in Fayetteville in March 1997. Just three months ago it moved onto 15 acres on Ga. Highway 85 south, one mile south of Hwy. 85 and Ga. Highway 16, just inside Coweta County. A modular chapel, which can seat 130 persons, is serving the church at this time, but phase two includes a permanent sanctuary similar to its starting place, a log cabin. "This is what God has been calling us to do," said the Rev. Dr. Knox Herndon, "and we look forward to doing it." On its new site, the congregation has already built a ball field, a five-acre nature trail and an outdoor pavilion complete with a brick barbecue pit. Herndon is the son of an Army chaplain and then became an Army chaplain himself, serving 23 years. He is graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in sociology and a minor in psychology. He is also a graduate of Emery's Candler School of Theology and received his doctorate from Drew University, New Jersey. His wife, Lydia, whom he married in 1976, also has a doctorate. Her specialty is in the field of character education and she currently serves as a consultant in character education consulting. They are the parents of two children. "This is a Southern 'on fire' Baptist Church," said Herndon. "It is a church that realizes that its needs include knowing that the word of God needs to be preached. It needs to be a place where people feel spiritually fed and forgiven, where they feel loved and accepted and a place where one can exercise their spiritual gifts, that is, they are welcome to practice whatever individual gifts God gave them." Current programs include "Weigh Down" Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m.; Wednesday evenings the youths and adults have Bible study. Currently, the adults are studying Revelation. The program begins at 7 p.m. Sunday mornings Sunday School is at 10 a.m., worship service is at 11 a.m. and a program for youth is at 6 p.m. Easter Sunday the congregation is planning a sunrise service at 8 a.m. Breakfast will follow immediately, and after the 11 a.m.
