Equality's not just a word in this family Army simultaneously promotes husband, wife to same rank

Promotion ceremonies in the military are certainly not uncommon, but a recent one for two Fayetteville residents at the U.S. Army Reserve Command at Fort McPherson was different than most.

Husband and wife Robert and Angela Walk were both promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in a ceremony March 29 in the atrium lobby of the USARC headquarters.

Maj. Gen. Craig Bambrough, USARC deputy commander, hosted the ceremony and commented that it was the first time he had ever promoted a husband and wife to the same rank at the same time.

Angela Walk was promoted first and her father, retired Air Force Lt. Col. David Spotswood, assisted with pinning on her new rank.

Robert Walk stepped over and quickly saluted his newly promoted wife, acknowledging she outranked him even if only for a couple of minutes, eliciting applause and laughter from the crowd. He was then promoted with his father, retired Army Col. James Walk, assisting with pinning on the new rank.

Angela Walk was commissioned in the Army in 1982 after completing her bachelor of arts degree in psychology through the Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship program at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.

She has served as an ordnance officer in Germany as well as at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. After leaving active duty in 1992, she joined the staff of the U.S. Army Reserve 95th Division (Institutional Training) in Oklahoma City in 1994. She is currently serving as an instructor at the Army's Combined Arms and Services Staff School at the Regional Training Institute of the Georgia Military Institute in Macon.

The Walks met in 1985 while both were Army first lieutenants and stationed in Germany. They married in 1987 after both had returned to the United States.

Robert Walk was commissioned in the Army in 1982 through the reserve officer training program at the University of New Hampshire. He has served as a chemical officer at various military sites in Germany and in this country.

He became a soldier-citizen when he switched from active duty to the Army Reserve in 1993. He joined the USARC staff in 1997 and is preparing to serve as the executive officer to the deputy chief of staff, operations.

The Walks live in Fayetteville with their son, Jacob, and their Scottish Terrier, Katie.
