Work to begin soon on jail, courthouse By JANET
McGREGOR
Construction on Fayette County's new jail and courthouse complex is expected to begin within a couple of weeks now that the bid has been awarded. Bell Construction Company will build the first phase of the project at a cost of $32.1 million. County commissioners last week unanimously recommended accepting the firm's low bid, and the Public Facilities Authority 30 minutes later approved the bid. The contract must now be finalized and signed. "Once that's done, we've told them within ten days to be on the site," said commission Chairman Greg Dunn. "We expect that'll be the third or fourth week of April." The bid includes only the first phase of the project, construction of the new sections of the jail and the new courthouse, and related site work. Renovation of the existing jail and courthouse will be bid later.
