County offering help for seniors to avoid gas cut-off

Fulton County senior citizens trying to contact gas companies about late payments can get help by calling the County Office of Aging at 404-730-6000.

Under "Operation Warm Glow," county staffers who answer the general information and assistance line will interview callers and e-mail billing information to gas companies so payment arrangements can be made. E-mails will also be sent to the Public Service Commission, which is monitoring the situation.

Additionally, eligible persons will be referred to the Fulton-Atlanta Community Action Agency for emergency funds to help pay gas bills.

Callers will be asked to give information on their bills, such as the name of their gas company, service address, telephone and account numbers, the amount of the bill and the disconnection date. Staffers also will ask how much the senior can pay monthly to avoid cutoffs.

The help telephone line is available 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
