Georgia Student Media Festival hosted at Huddleston Teachers from throughout Georgia recently gathered at Huddleston Elementary School to participate as judges in this year's District 3 Georgia Student Media Festival. The purpose of the festival is to stimulate student interest and involvement in all types of media production. This is accomplished by providing an opportunity for students to show their work to an interested audience, to have the work critiqued by a panel of expert judges, and to be stimulated by the work of other students. Sponsored by the Georgia Association for Instructional Technology and the Georgia Library Media Association Inc., the contest is open to students in grades K-12. All entries had to be written, produced, directed, edited, photographed, filmed or taped by students. In addition to the finished product, students were required to submit the written concepts and story boards to accompany the productions. The subject of the entry could deal with any theme and could be treated in any format. Examples included stories, documentaries, teaching units or entertainment pieces. All students competing in the contest received one of three rating certificates: participation, merit or superior. Only superior winners advanced to the state competition. Forty judges from school systems including Pike, Newton, Meriwether, Muscogee, Henry, Thomaston-Upson and Fayette rated 148 different videos from counties around Georgia on content and organization, technical quality and general effectiveness. The judges selected 54 videos to advance to the national competition. Although no Fayette students were selected for the state competition, Flat Rock Middle School had three students who received merit ratings for sequential stills (PowerPoint presentations) and one student who earned a participation rating for a Web site design. Those students receiving merit ratings were Brandon Knowles for Volcanoes, Danny Coggins and Michael Walker for Explosive Eruptions (volcanoes), and Jean Robinson's first period class for What's Your Favorite Rock Group (geology). Suzanne Flowers received a participation rating for her Web site design. "All of Fayette's entries were awesome. You just never know what the judges are going to do. Those who won merit ratings received a score of between 90 and 94. The cutoff to go to state is 95, so overall our students did very well," said Barbara Harris, media specialist at Huddleston Elementary and coordinator of the district three competition.
