CCSU to inaugurate president

Thomas K. Harden, Ed.D., will be inaugurated as the third president in the 32-year history of Clayton College & State University at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 12.

The inauguration will be the centerpiece of a two-day celebration for the university, its students, faculty and staff, and the presidents of the rest of the University System of Georgia. With the theme "Ageless Lessons and New Perspectives," the inauguration program will feature three separate events from the evening of April 11 to noon April 12.

The program will begin with a special, invitation-only performance featuring faculty and staff of the university's Music Department, organist-in-residence Richard Morris, and the Spivey Hall Children's Choir in the University's world-renowned Spivey Hall.

Harden's inauguration will take place on the University's new stage in the Athletics & Fitness Center from 10:30 a.m. to noon, to be followed by a student-organized picnic that will also be the highlight of the university's annual Spring Fling week. The inaugural ceremony will be preceded by a formal academic procession from the Harry S. Downs Center for Continuing Education to the Athletics & Fitness Center.

The presidents of the USG institutions, who will be visiting the Clayton State campus for a quarterly system presidents' meeting the afternoon of April 11, have been invited to march in the procession.

Formerly the dean of the College of Technology and interim dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University, Harden was appointed president of Clayton State as of June 1, 2000 by USG Chancellor Stephen R. Portch, Ph.D., who will officially invest Harden as Clayton State's president at next month's inauguration ceremony.

Harden has more than 30 years of experience in various leadership positions of increasing responsibility, having previously served at Northern Kentucky University, Southwest Texas State University, Western Illinois University, and his alma mater, Miami University.

Harden earned his bachelor of science degree in industrial education in 1974, from Miami University of Ohio; and an M.S. in educational administration from the University of Dayton, in 1978. He earned his Ed.D. in adult/technical education, curriculum and instruction, and educational administration, from the University of Cincinnati, in 1981. In addition, in 1995, Harden earned a certificate in college management from Carnegie-Mellon University.

A native of Middletown, Ohio, Harden and his wife, Cathy, have four children. One child is a college graduate and the remaining three children are currently pursuing undergraduate studies. Cathy Harden also holds degrees from Miami University (B.S., 1974) and the University of Cincinnati (M.Ed.)

Clayton College & State University, a member institution of the University System of Georgia, is in Morrow, in south metro Atlanta. Approximately 10 percent of its students come from Fayette County.
