Mathematics students bring home awards
Fayette County's students continue to excel in math competitions. Starr's Mill and McIntosh high schools placed first and second, respectively, in the 27th annual Griffin Regional Educational Student Association mathematics contest, conducted recently at the University of Georgia Experiment Station. Sandy Creek and Fayette County high schools placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Nine high schools from the Griffin RESA district competed. The Starr's Mill team was made up of Chris Reed, Bob Martin, Jon Straub, Danny Karnik and Matt Ward. Students participating on the McIntosh team were Janet Lin, Tony Hung, Lee Huynh and Yosuke Nomura. In addition to team awards, individual awards were given. Nomura of McIntosh won first place in the individual competition scoring highest on the written examination. Reed of Starr's Mill placed third. Winning teams and students were presented trophies and plaques. The objectives of the competition are to stimulate interest in mathematics, to give recognition to outstanding mathematics students and to provide for healthy academic competition. The contest consisted of two events: a written test taken by the students individually and a ciphering event in which the teams consult in order to present a team-determined response.
