Fayette's Science Olympians advance to state competition
Science Olympians at four Fayette County schools hope to repeat the first place victories they enjoyed at the regional Science Olympiad last month in the upcoming state competition. Rising Starr Middle, Booth Middle, McIntosh High and Sandy Creek High schools all took first place this year in their divisions at the regional Olympiad. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. Since Science Olympiad is an extracurricular activity, devoted students spend time before or after school studying and practicing for competition. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows and athletic games. These events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications. Most events require students to answer questions regarding a particular area of science. Other events test skills and knowledge by giving students a bag of building materials and asking them to construct a specific device in 40 minutes. The apparatus must be able to be tested for proper performance. Students do not know the assignment until they enter the competition. The state Olympiad will be in Columbus, Ga. March 31 and at Emory University April 14. This is the second step in the process to advancing to the national competition, which will be in Colorado Springs, Colo. in May.
