A softball tournament to benefit the local American Red Cross unit and the Georgia Special Olympics will be Saturday, April 21 through Sunday, April 22.

The tournament, at McCurry Park's softball fields, is hosted by the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. The entry fee is $225 per team, and teams must sign up by April 13 by phoning Donnie Davis at 770-473-9884 or Scott Ward at 770-461-5266, ext. 1393.

Along with the tournament, organizers have scheduled prize giveaways, raffles, food booths and other vendors, and there's a playground for the kids to enjoy. Among the prizes to be raffled is an autographed hockey puck from Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Chris Tamer.

"We want to make this an event the whole family will enjoy," Davis said.

The tournament will adhere to American Softball Association rules, with one-hour time limits on games and a limit of four home runs per team. First and second place trophies will be awarded.

Both the Fire Department and the Sheriff's Department will field teams in the event.

Fayette County is served by the South Metro Center of the American Red Cross.

"The Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services relies heavily on the American Red Cross to help meet the needs of disaster victims in our community, from natural disasters to residential building fires," said Capt. Pete Nelms. "So this is the department's effort to give something back; it's clearly a partnership."

Last year, the American Red Cross South Metro Center disbursed almost $125,000 to disaster victims in the four counties they serve. That assistance included housing, food, home furnishings and referrals to other service providers.

Businesses and organizations wishing to sponsor teams, display their business banners or set up vendor tables at the tournament may phone Sami McNeal at 770-961-2552.
