'Lord, is it I?' 'Last Supper' frames church play By DAVE HAMRICK
The Bethany United Methodist Church will present an unusual variation on the Easter story next week with its production of "Lord, Is It I?" It's a dramatic presentation based on Leonardo Da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper." Directed by Lynn Outlaw, the play will be presented Maundy Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary. "It's a very meaningful service," said Outlaw, who has directed the production three times in other towns but is bringing it to Fayette for her first time. As the play opens, Jesus and the 12 disciples are assembled for the Passover meal when Jesus makes the well-known pronouncement that one of the 12 will betray him. At that point, the characters demand, "Is it I?" and freeze in the DaVinci pose. One at a time each disciple performs a soliloquy, telling the history of how he met Jesus and became involved in his ministry, and details of his personal relationship with the Lord. The final soliloquy is that of Jesus himself. "It's a good way for the audience to learn more about the disciples and their background, the relationship to Jesus and their relationships with each other," said Outlaw. "It's also a time when people can reflect and see what happened that Thursday when Jesus was betrayed," she added. The cast includes Outlaw's husband, church pastor the Rev. Mark Outlaw, who has performed in the play under her direction before. "It helps to have someone who has done this before and can help explain what we're going for in each scene," she said. "We've been rehearsing since January," said Outlaw. The presentation will conclude with special music a duet performance of "In Remembrance of Me" and a Communion service. The community is invited. A nursery will be provided. Bethany UMC is at 607 Rivers Road in north Fayette. For information phone 770-964-6999.
