Landmark students shine in annual science fair

Landmark Christian School recently conducted its elementary science fair under the direction of science teachers Caren Peterson and Valerie Powell.

Each grade level was assigned a category to research and then compiled a project. The pre-first graders created an object by recycling goods, the first graders built animal habitats, the second graders studied an endangered species, the third graders illustrated the life cycle of a species, fourth grade students researched an aspect of space and built a model, and fifth and sixth graders completed an experiment of their choosing using a purpose, hypothesis, procedure, observation and conclusion.

The students worked on the projects for much of one quarter.

Although parents supplied the materials, they were not allowed to help. All work was done at school. Once all the completed projects were arranged in the gym, a team of volunteer judges began their work. Two judges graded each project and their scores were averaged for the final percentage. Children above the pre-first level was also interviewed for accuracy and content of their reports by the judges.

The pre-first through third grade winners were Rachel Carter, Bradley Belveal, Diana Ruppenthal, Sam Smith, Blake Miranda, Rachel Caudelle, Katy Wilson, Danielle Ruppenthal, Cori Robinson and Sean Plunkett.

The winners for the fourth through sixth grades included Erin Hogan, Brandon Belveal, Brooke Miranda, Keely Williams, Whitney Wright, Kaity Bulger, Emily Roberts, Dylan Crumbley, Ryan Lloyd, Will Geeslin, Katie Parker and Kelly Jackson.

These students were chosen for their top scores in their grades, and they all received trophies. The other students received superior, excellent and good ribbons based on their scores.
