Fairburn grew 36 percent in '90s

The city of Fairburn keeps growing.

In U.S. Census figures released last week, City Administrator Tony Cox said the city's population now stands at 5,464.

The figures represent a 36 percent increase since 1990 and Cox said the figure represents only the beginning of the growth period for the city.

With new subdivisions springing up monthly, Cox expects the city to grow at an even more rapid rate.

In other news, Cox said the city is going to have to make a decision on a traffic light at Ga. Highway 74 and Oakley Industrial Boulevard.

The intersection routinely sees three to five wrecks a week, and Cox said the cost of the light is $96,000.

The city has received a pledge of $35,000 from Simmons, who owns a warehousing facility on the road and may also receive $10,000 from Green Oil.

Cox was hoping that Fulton County would kick in for the light, but learned last week that the county would not commit any funds.

With the funding now up to the city, Cox asked the City Council to mull over the issue and possibly make a decision at its first meeting in April.
