Builders get more freedom

Builders in Coweta County are breathing a sigh of relief after actions taken by the County Commission this week.

In a called meeting Monday, the board rescinded its previous moratorium on slab-on-grade construction.

March 20, the board enacted the moratorium because of concerns over enhancing the product and keeping water out of houses during heavy rainstorms.

In rescinding the motion, Commissioner Lawrence Nelms asked the staff to look at the possibility of extending the form for the footing to give the appearance that the house is higher in grade and having more of the finished foundation showing.

County Building Department chief Don Youngblood added the changes implemented by the commission would require the drainage to be completed before a certificate of occupancy would be granted.

Any changes in the requirements would be handled through a public hearing later this spring.
