Large crowd comes out to oppose development By JOHN
THOMPSON
A development on Ga. Highway 85 caused residents of Senoia to turn out in record numbers Tuesday night to voice their opposition. Developers want to build 87 homes on the 42-acre site. But the developer wants an R-20 open space zoning that would allow lots as small as a quarter of an acre. As part of the zoning, nearly 14 acres of the site would be left as green space. But residents were nearly united in calling for the property to be zoned at a lower density. "You've got a great little community, but I can see where it's going. Look at the big picture. I'm against these small lots," said Jim Spearman. Resident Nancy Roy said the zoning needed to be left alone, because "there is no character in high-density zoning." The lone voice supporting the zoning was former Councilman Kyle Frank, who suggested the higher density would be better for the city. "This is not going to be a walkable city with two-acre lots," he said. City planner Bill Johnston recommended the zoning. By placing a residential development on the site, Johnston said the city could possibly stem the flow of commercial developments on the busy state highway. The city will vote on the development next Monday.
