Senoia is hopeful for downtown grant

By this summer, downtown Senoia could have a new look.

Mayor Joan Trammell announced at Monday night's council meeting that the city's Downtown Development Authority had applied for a $20,000 grant to give the city's downtown a more historic flavor.

The grant would help pay for 15 brick planters down the middle of Main Street and also nine historic traffic signs.

The mayor said the signs would be mounted on white, wooden poles and have the city's emblem of Princess Senoia on them.

If the city receives the grant, it would be responsible for $10,000 of the total cost. Trammell said the county has agreed to help her with labor costs, so the city's actual outlay would be just over $7,000.

In a similar vein, Councilman Pam Youngblood announced the city is looking for donors to place more historic light posts in the city. Last year, the city placed old-fashioned lights on Main Street. Now, it wants to continue placing the lights from Main Street to the bridge on Rockaway Road.

The light posts cost $1,800 and Youngblood said a resident can get a plaque placed next to a light for a $600 donation.

Trammell said the initial lampposts on Main Street were such a success that she has had numerous people ask her about donating toward new ones.

She is hopeful the city can get at least enough donations to place 10 lights on the road. The total project would place 22 lamps on the entry way into the city.
