Alleged abduction nets indictment By JOHN
MUNFORD
A Newnan man has been indicted by a Fayette County grand jury for kidnapping and battery stemming from the abduction of a woman from the Sleep Inn in Peachtree City in June. Dexter Smith, 28, of Newnan, was indicted for kidnapping and battery after police said he took his ex-girlfriend from the parking lot of the Sleep Inn in Peachtree City. Smith was apprehended after the incident in Meriwether County when a sheriff's deputy pulled him over for driving erratically. It was later discovered that Smith's vehicle left the road because he was striking the victim, police said. Police said the victim, who lives in Newnan, was planning to stay with relatives at the Sleep Inn that evening. Other indictments handed down included the following people: Eligh D. Hammond for aggravated assault and reckless driving. He is accused of ramming a vehicle three times on Ga. Highway 74 near Crestwood Road in Tyrone last October. Thomas Steven Vazquez for armed robbery. He is accused of using a handgun to rob an employee of the Burger King in Fayetteville, getting over $1,500 in cash. David R. Garza for armed robbery, possession of marijuana (less than one ounce) and underage possession of alcohol. He is accused of robbing a man at gunpoint at the night deposit area of the Bank of America in Peachtree City last November.
