James: Taxis may not be collecting all sales taxes

Sen. Donzella James wants to see if Old National Highway should be expanded.

In a bill introduced in the General Assembly, James wants to see a committee established on expanding the road.

The bill states that the highway is one of the major thoroughfares running through South Fulton and the traffic has steadily worsened because of the number of businesses that have moved to the area.

If the bill passes, the committee would commission a study to look at the traffic conditions and then conduct regular meetings to inform citizens of the progress.

The committee would meet for the remainder of this year and disband by the end of the year.

James also has introduced a bill to investigate the collection of sales taxes by taxi cab operators.

Taxi cab owners and operators are required to register with the Department of Revenue as dealers for purposes of collecting sales and use taxes on fares for transportation of persons.

But James believes the collection of the taxes has been inconsistent at best and wants the state to conduct an investigation of the practice.

If any inconsistencies are found, James wants the state to commence uniform enforcement of all applicable sales and use tax requirements with respect to taxicab fares and operations.
