Fayette's outstanding volunteers sought

If you know and adult or youth who has worked hard as a volunteer during the past year, the United Way in Fayette County wants to know about it.

The organization is planning its tenth annual volunteer recognition banquet, recognizing an adult and a young person who have exhibited outstanding volunteer efforts. Nominees in each category will be honored at the annual luncheon May 3 at the Fayette County Library.

Deadline for nominations is March 26.

"We especially want to know about teenage volunteers," said Jack Krakeel, director of Fayette's Department of Fire and Emergency Services and chairman of the local Volunteerism Committee. "Our youth are a resource often overlooked as volunteers.

"Community service habits are formed early in life," he said, "and the United Way wants to help young people to become community leaders by recognizing their efforts."

Primary focus of the awards is to encourage volunteering and to recognize volunteer efforts in the county. Anyone can nominate a volunteer.

Volunteers must be Fayette County residents, and their service must be truly voluntary and not to meet court mandates or school requirements. Individual students as well as Beta Clubs, Key Clubs or other club members are eligible.

Youth nominees must be in high school, ninth through 12th grades.

Phone the United Way office at 770-719-2252 for a nomination form.
