PTC ready to celebrate Tree City USA honor

Peachtree City residents are invited to celebrate the city's new designation as a member of the Tree City USA program.

A ceremony recognizing the efforts of those who helped get that certification will be conducted at City Hall Friday at 2 p.m. Mayor Pro Tem Annie McMenamin will recognize members of the city's tree board, which includes city employees and volunteers, said Betsy Tyler, city public information specialist.

Also recognized will be the city's beautification committee, which helped provide the manpower for planting trees in the city, and a citizen who helped get the ball rolling for the program, Tyler noted.

In addition to receiving a plaque from Tree City USA, the city will also celebrate the occasion by planting a "millennium growth" tree near City Hall. The Willow Oak that will be planted, which is one of the original Georgia trees, will be at the corner of Willowbend Road and Ga. Highway 54.

To qualify for the Tree City USA designation, the city had to spend at least $2 per resident on trees. The city council authorized an extra $10,000 on top of that figure to enhance the program for the past two years, Tyler added.

Another requirement was to form a tree board to oversee the spending of the funds and adopt a tree ordinance, Tyler said.
