School system looks for land

The Coweta County School System's effort to build an arts center could get a helping hand from the city of Newnan.

Last week, officials with the school system and Newnan engaged in preliminary talks about possibly working together. Newnan wants to build a convention center and officials are talking about possibly building the two centers next to each other.

"We could have shared parking for both facilities. But we're still in the beginning stages," said Superintendent of Education Richard Brooks.

The performing arts center is the last item that has not been built that was specified in the school system's special purpose local option sales tax.

School officials are in the process of looking at different sites around the county for the center and want to see if it would be cost-effective to do a joint project with the city.

"There are a lot of issues to examine and we want to make sure we do what's right for our students," Brooks said.

The board is expected to continue its talks with Newnan during the next few weeks before it makes its final decision on a site for the center.
