Oak Grove students shine in Current Events Bowl

If you need an update or a refresher on the most current events happening in the United States and around the world, just ask the students at Oak Grove Elementary School.

Since the beginning of the year, teachers in grades 2-5 have been working with their students to help them stay abreast of events that have helped to shape the world.

These students will show how knowledgeable they are on world events this Friday during the school's third annual Current Events and News Bowl competition. Approximately 80 students will work in small teams to help answer questions pertaining to events that have been in the news this year.

"This is a really fun activity for the students," says enrichment teacher and bowl coordinator Cathie Harroll of Oak Grove. "Although we call it a competition, it is more of a celebration of all the knowledge the students have absorbed during the year."

Harroll says the students are placed in small teams so that no one person will be put on the spot. Also, the same question is asked of all the teams. Each team who answers correctly gets a point. Teams are identified with special names such as "Nosy Newsies."

The bowl will begin at 8:30 a.m. for the fourth grade followed by a combined competition at 9:45 a.m. for the second and third grades. The fifth grade will compete at 12:30 p.m. Parents of students at Oak Grove are invited.
