Two Flat Rock science teachers receive honors

Science teachers Jean Robinson and Mikie Emerson of Flat Rock Middle School have been named Georgia Science Teacher of the Year for the 5th District and Georgia Marine Educator of the Year, respectively.

Robinson received her recognition from the Georgia Association of Science Teachers. Principal Tyrone Jones and fellow faculty member Emerson nominated her for the award.

In addition, a parent of a past student also submitted a letter of nomination regarding her teaching methods. As a district winner, Robinson will automatically be nominated for the state competition.

"This is very new to me. Just knowing that my fellow teachers and principal feel that I do an exceptional job gives me such honor and joy," says Robinson. "It is great to be recognized for what I love to do. I owe part of the credit to my incredible team of teachers who make my work here so enjoyable."

Robinson teaches eighth grade science. She has been teaching at Flat Rock since it opened in 1990.

Emerson received her award from the Georgia Association of Marine Education, which is primarily composed of educators who teach about the ocean and related topics. Every year the organization recognizes a teacher as an outstanding marine educator.

A fellow member of the organization nominated Emerson. Members nominate fellow teachers who they feel have done a good job teaching about oceanography or marine biology.

"I feel honored to be named Marine Educator of the Year by my peers. It came as quite a surprise," says Emerson.

Emerson teaches seventh and eighth grade gifted science. She has taught at the school for eight years.
