Fayette's top spellers headed for district competition

Chris Cool, an eighth-grader at J.C. Booth Middle School, has won the Fayette County Spelling Bee Championship.

Cool, along with first runner-up Tommy Smith, a seventh-grader at Fayette Middle School, will represent the Fayette County School System in the district spelling bee March 3 at 10 a.m. at Arbor Station Elementary School in Douglasville.

In addition to being great spellers, both students are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities.

Cool is a member of the J.C. Booth Middle School chorus and academic bowl. In his spare time, he enjoys wrestling, Karate, reading, playing with the computer and jogging.

Smith plays the saxophone in the Fayette Middle School band. He also enjoys wrestling and geography. Smith was the 1999 Geography Bee winner for East Fayette Elementary School.
