Fayette students excel at regional science competition

The results of the Regional Educational Service Agency Regional Science Fair are in and Fayette students walked away with many top awards across the board.

Out of the 17 projects sent to the regional competition, 15 of them placed in the top three of their divisions and categories.

"This was an exceptionally good competition for Fayette County schools. We succeeded at a phenomenal rate in terms of percentages," said Sharon Boyer, science/health coordinator for Fayette County schools.

The first place winners will go on to compete in the state Science and Engineering Fair, which will be at the University of Georgia April 5-7.

Fayette will send five projects to the state competition. At the competition, the projects will have a chance of being selected to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair, set for later this year.

The winners are as follows:

Junior Division: First place - Aaron Kirschner, Rotational Inertia of Wheels, Flat Rock Middle; second - Lindsey Renee Gunter, Home Dry Cleaning Kits: Do they work?, Fayette Middle; third - Jade Briggs, What Material Absorbs the Most Water?, Flat Rock Middle; team second - Matt Alberts, Danny Giglio, Model Rocketry, Flat Rock Middle; team third - Michael Sanders, Drew Johnson, Phillip Sims, Homerun Derby, Flat Rock Middle.

Senior Division: First, biochemistry - Tony Hung, Identifying DNA Photolesion Binding Proteins in Lemna minor L., McIntosh High; first, botany - Melinda Murray, Is Cold Hardiness Inherited in Abelia?, Starr's Mill High; first microbiology, Jessica King, Does the Organism That Causes TB Have a Known DNA Plasmid?, Fayette County High; second botany - Brian Johns, Growing Under Pressure, Sandy Creek High; second, computers - Chad Cross, Cluster: A Peer to Peer File Sharing Internet Application, Starr's Mill High; second engineering - Joel Siegel, Batteries: Is There Truth to the Claims?, Fayette County High; second, microbiology - Rebecca Timmis, WANTED: The Best Oral Disinfectant, McIntosh High; third, physics - Daniel Jury, Which Louisville Baseball Bat Will Hit a Ball the Farthest?, Sandy Creek High; team first - Daniel Anderson, Natalie Amoroso, Fractal Music: Does It Really Exist?, Fayette County High; team second - Brett Haynie, Phillip Strickland, Variegation: Appeal or Effect?, Starr's Mill High;
