Stoplight halt might delay Home Depot, Wal-Mart By JOHN MUNFORD
The final site plan for the Wal-Mart and Home Depot shopping center in Peachtree City has long been submitted to the city's Planning Department. But for now, they're just gathering dust. That's for several reasons, city planner David Rast told the Planning Commission Monday night. For starters, the city is waiting on more information from the developer, RAM Development. Also, RAM hasn't received a permit for the "through lane" from the Georgia Department of Transportation, Rast said. RAM has been notified the final plans won't be presented to the Planning Commission until all the information has been received, including the approved permits from the DOT, he added. But there's one element gumming up the works that RAM can't control the possible denial of a traffic light on Ga. Highway 54 for The Avenue at Peachtree City. When traffic projections were calculated for the Wal-Mart/Home Depot center, engineers used a scenario with the light at The Avenue. The city has not been notified in writing that the state Department of Transportation will deny the light that was planned on Hwy. 54 at the entrance to The Avenue. If a denial is put in writing, the traffic study will have to be re-calculated, Director of Developmental Services Jim Williams said Friday. That could put the Wal-Mart/Home Depot shopping center on hold at least until the new figures come back in, Williams said. "It (the light for The Avenue) was an important part of the traffic plan," said Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services. "It definitely will have an effect." Williams hopes the light will eventually gain DOT approval. But if the written denial of the light comes in, the city will immediately authorize another calculation of the traffic numbers for all projects on that corridor of Hwy. 54, Williams added. "It will, in effect, put everything on hold," Williams said.
