Former magistrate, legislator Huddleston dead at 77

Grady Huddleston, 77, Fayetteville, died Feb. 20, 2001.

He was the son of Robert and Emily Pope Huddleston, and was reared in the Clover community of what is now Peachtree City.

He created the state of Georgia Merit System which he oversaw for more than 20 years. He later served as a Fayette representative in the state Legislature for 14 years and was a judge in the Magistrate Court of Fayette County for more than 12 years.

He was preceded in death by parents, his stepmother, Myrtice Whitlock Huddleston, and a brother, Hugh Huddleston.

Survivors include his wife of almost 52 years, Carolyn Putman Huddleston; daughters Anne Palcer, Virginia and Geeje Huddleston, Atlanta; a brother, Kenneth Huddleston, Americus; and sisters Florene Adams, Fayetteville, Ruby Shelley, Thomaston and Linda Blanchard, Fayetteville.

Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 24 at the First Baptist Church of Fayetteville.
