Sidewalk work nearing completion

Folks who work around the square in Fayetteville should have brand new sidewalks on which to take those lunchtime strolls within a few weeks.

Construction work continues on the sidewalk and street light project under the direction of the city's Main Street program, and the sidewalks could be done by the second week of March, weather permitting, according to City Manager Joe Morton.

The current phase of the project stretches along Lanier Avenue from Regions Bank on the west to Jeff Davis Boulevard on the east, and around the old courthouse. New sidewalks are also being put into place on Ga. Highway 85 south past City Hall to Beauregard Boulevard.

After the brick work is done and cleaned up, Georgia Power will come in and install new street lights that help give the entire project a historic look and feel, Morton said.

Main Street is gearing up for a new year with a new director, as Nancy Price was introduced at Tuesday morning's board meeting. Her work at City Hall officially begins Monday.

She has been a board member but will likely be replaced at next week's City Council meeting. The board has recommended former Fayette County Commissioner Scott Burrell to replace Price on the board.
