Authorities recall eight serious golf cart accidents since 1991, including child run over by cart

Fire Chief Stony Lohr has enlisted assistance "of those with long-term memories" in remembering the most serious golf cart accidents in Peachtree City since 1991. After racking their brains, the group came up with eight incidents with significant injuries, including:

Child falls off bumper, gets run over by cart.

A drunken cart driver rolls into Lake Peachtree and becomes pinned underneath the cart.

A cart strikes a tree, sending the driver through the windshield.

Two accidents where carts were struck by cars: one at Braelinn Village Shopping Center and one on Peachtree Parkway.

Last year, only 10 golf cart accidents were reported although none were serious in nature, Lohr said.

"It's just like anything else," Lohr said. "If you abuse them, people can get hurt or killed."

Lohr urges cart drivers to use common sense and good judgement to avoid accidents in golf carts. He also said some carts can short out, causing a fire. If that happens, the cart's occupants should evacuate the vehicle and call 911 to report the fire. Sometimes, a fire extinguisher could be handy to have on board the cart in case that ever happens, he added.
