Rules set for vacant council seat
By JOHN
MUNFORD Peachtree City may have a new council member to replace Robert Brooks as early as Tuesday, March 6. That's the date council has set to interview all applicants for the vacant seat. According to a notice filed by the city, council could make its decision that evening or wait until its regularly scheduled meeting March 15. Qualifying has already begun for Peachtree City residents wishing to fill the remainder of Brooks's term, which expires Dec. 31. The seat will be permanently filled by the voters during the general election in November. Applicants' interviews with council will be held at a public meeting March 6 at 6 p.m. At that time, each applicant will make a five-minute presentation to explain why he or she should be appointed, according to a public notice filed by the city. After the presentations, council members will be allowed to ask questions of the applicants, although no questions will be allowed from the public or the members of the media. The qualifying fee is set at $180 and applicants must be a registered voter, at least 21 years old and have lived in the city for at least six months. Brooks resigned at last week's council meeting, indicating that he wanted to help the city in other ways, particularly in the development of the city's industrial park.
