Commuters zooming by the Federal Aviation Administration's new radar approach facility in Peachtree City on south Ga. Highway 74 may have started noticing an increase in activity on the site.

That's because the facility is now just weeks from opening, according to FAA officials.

The facility will house the radar division for the air traffic control facilities at Hartsfield International Airport.

Spokesperson Kathleen Bergen said air traffic at airports is regulated by controllers in the tower and at ground level in a radar facility.

The controllers in the radar operations center control flights from 40 to 50 miles outside of the airport until the plane is within about 15,000 feet. At that point, the controllers in the tower guide the flights.

The facility is expected to be commissioned in the next few weeks and she said a ribbon cutting will be conducted to welcome the facility to Peachtree City.
