Seniors may get a tax break

Coweta's seniors may get a tax break after all.

Superintendent of Education Richard Brooks confirmed this week that the school system will ask local legislators to introduce legislation to call for a referendum this fall.

The referendum would allow voters to decide whether seniors should be partially or totally exempt from paying property tax for the school system's maintenance and operation costs.

"We're still waiting to get figures in from the tax office," Brooks said.

The issue has exploded on the scene in the last two weeks after resident Bill Griggers approached the Coweta County Commission about providing a tax break.

Griggers has gathered petitions and has been trying to get a referendum on the ballot that would eliminate the maintenance and operation taxes for residents 65 and older.

Brooks said board Chairman Mike Sumner approached the legislators last week about calling for the referendum.

Griggers has pointed out to the school board and the Coweta County Commission that Coweta County is one of the few counties that does not offer seniors any break on their taxes.
